Shortened history of the castle:
Gisors Castle is one of the oldest fortresses of Normandy. Its construction began in 1096.
In 1188, the Third Crusade was preached at Gisors. Henry II and Philip Auguste met there.
In 1193 Philippe Auguste delivered the castle from the english troops. He undertook major work: Construction of the Prisoner's Tower, the Tour of the Governor and the White Tower.
During the XVIth century a man was imprisoned in the Tower of the prisoner, hence its name, and he carved beautiful paintings depicting the Christ's Passion.
In the seventeenth century, Sully downgraded the fortress and it lost its military role.
